Grant Rach
(Outfitter/Co-Owner/)
Grant would never tell you this but he is one hell of a guide. His attention to the details and determination sets him apart from the norm. As a professional guide he had been previously tasked with “famous” hunters and some of the hardest hunts with high expectations without missing a beat. He has been included in high pressure auction tag hunts and extreme condition trips and always goes the extra mile for the team in any situation. Grant has a “nack” for getting it done and getting it done as good as anyone. As the leader of Summit Bighorns he brings all the qualities needed to run a smooth, organized, driven and successful hunting company. Hes loved by his team and feared by his competition.
Grant grew up hunting and fishing and has been an avid outdoorsman his whole life. His love for the outdoors started very early growing up fishing and hunting the Mighty Peace River Valley from ages 5-11.
After that his family moved back to Rocky Mtn, West Central Alberta at the age of 11 where his mothers side of the family resides. His experience in the outdoors rapidly grew then on. From hunting trips with family, trips to his uncles trapline, harvesting his first deer at 14 and then off hunting on his own and with like minded friends. He has been a serious hunter ever since. Being raised in a province where over the counter tags for most species was readily available allowed him to pursue and learn how to hunt a variety of big game animals including sheep, elk, moose, whitetail deer, mule deer, bears n’ coyotes.
• Growing up playing sports was a big part of Grant's life having earned metals in each of the following competitive organized sports played; hockey, baseball, volleyball, basketball, badminton.
• Grant has always had a strong love for adventure, traveling to 33 different countries. Backpacked once for 6 months one winter from Mexico down to Argentina; through 14 different countries.
• Grant studied Land & Water Recourses - majoring in Land Reclamation at Olds College earning him a professional designation as a Registered Technologist in Agrology with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists.
• For the past 10 years positions in his professional (non-hunting) career include but not limited to contracting him self out through his own company as an Environmental/Reclamation Consultant for a large pipeline company spanning across 3 different provinces. Currently an Environmental Specialist for Canada’s very own; owned and operated Trans Mountain Pipelines (in which he will be stepping back from this role in 2025 to focus entirely on his love… Guiding and Outfitting). This career has been not only rewarding to him but highly fulfilling. Helping the “grass grow and rivers flow” within our beautiful country. “It has given me a special gift of a greater understanding & connection to mother nature”. As a reclamation professional it has been his duty to understand provincial/federal codes of practice, regulations and procedures; and to put the land back as if it had never been disturbed. He is a true professional on and off the mountain.
• Grant has been an entrepreneur and hard worker from a young age. Starting a yard maintenance business to picking bottles at the age of 7-12. Then on to working for his relatives catering business, a grocery store, then a warden at a Scouts Canada Camp before college. During college summers a laborer for a large scale construction company and during college worked at the Olds auction mart. After college he worked for a reclamation company while working on a grain/cattle farm at the same time.
• Grant then got a job working on the oil field rigs; he worked his way up from green hand all the way up to rig manager at the age of 25. This is where he learned true work ethic, a variety of troubleshooting skills and teamwork. During his time with the company he started his own oil field rental company; renting 2-way radios, gas monitors, trailers and other oilfield equipment. In 2015 the oil patch crashed and thats when he found his opportunity to become a land reclamation consultant to finally utilize his formal education. In the past 10 years on top of consulting he has started his guiding services business, a food service business, an airbnb rental business, and an ice fishing cabin rentals & outfitting business.Grant has always done everything in his power to stay busy building his future as he has big dreams and believes that anything is possible.
• Any way you look at it, Grant is driven too succeed and letting him have your confidence in fulfilling your dream hunt is not something he takes lightly. You will get his best… no matter what.
Grant started backpacking deep in the west central rocky mountains at the young age of 15. Striking out with 2 highschool friends with nothing but their backpacks the 3 of them hiked from Jasper park hwy 93 over sunset pass down into Pinto lake, along the cline river, into Hidden, landslide and lake of the falls lakes. Then out to hwy 11 at Abraham lake. Over 100km in total over 4 days. This trip is where the fire was lit and the mountains would… from those days forward… be calling his name. The same mountains which he now gets to guide and outfit directly adjacent to today.
Grant began Bighorn sheep hunting at the age of 21 with his closest friend. He has hunted every sheep season since (mainly during the late October season when conditions are the toughest.) Going on countless hunts by horseback, UTV/ATV and mostly by way of foot. Grant has been fortunate enough to have harvested 2 rocky mountain bighorn sheep himself and passed up on his fair share of rams too.
His best friends and sheep hunting partners began guiding in their early 20’s in which the stories and pictures intrigued him so much that he thought; I need to guide. Grant has since jumped on many opportunities, guiding professionally in a range of locations/outfits spanning from the Yukon, NWT, British-Columbia., Alberta, Nevada, Utah and Mexico. He has passionately guided hunts for many different species in north america, including: (Yukon/Alaskan moose, Canadian moose, elk, deer, mtn goat, grizzly, black bear, mtn caribou, wolves, and wolverines) in which he enjoys hunting them all. However, sheep hunting is his obsession. Having now successfully guided Dall, Fannin, Rocky’s, Californias and Desert Bighorn Sheep he is hoping to add Stone Sheep to that list in early August of 2026 up at Backcountry BC & Beyond for his partner Dustin Roe.
Grant plans to continue guiding 1 sheep hunt a year for Dustin and Colbie in the Yukon or BC in early August to scratch the itch of the North before its time to get ready for the Bighorn hunts. While also continuing to help guide for desert bighorns down in the Baja of Mexico with Dustin and the Backcountry BC crew in February and March each season.
The memories he makes guiding are some of the most coveted memories he holds dear to his heart. He really enjoys every aspect of the industry, from nature, photography, horsemanship, stewardship, education, leadership and the conservation angles. He feels a special sort of connection with the earth, quite spiritual he says. Grant believes that clients should not just be treated as valued clients but each one as a potential life long friend; and that we are in the tourism n’ hospitality business not just the killing business. Everyone deserves good communication, respect and attention. Grant is self-assured that he will always work very hard to ensure this is the case.
“This industry has taught me alot about myself. It throws steady challenges which force me to problem solve constantly and I enjoy that. I also enjoy the simple way of life, living in the backcountry provides. I am proud to call myself a guide/outfitter and always will, I am made for challenging times. The harder the grind the better. I’ve always said you don’t remember the easy ones quite as much… However there’s nothing wrong with taking the easy opportunities when they are present. Some of my goals are to carry on the tradition of guiding n’ outfitting and pass it on to younger generations. I want to stand up for conservation by helping preserve trophy hunting. Hold myself and my team accountable each day and operate in the most ethical and stewardly way possible in regards to the land we hunt and animals who occupy it. I’ll end with saying just how thankful I am for the people I have met in this industry; grateful for the places and animals I have hunted; the opportunities I have been afforded and proud of my team and friends that I have made along the way.”
